Biden commemorates 500,000 Americans who have died of COVID-19
President Biden addressed the nation on Monday evening as the United States' COVID-19 death toll exceeded 500,000. 'We often hear people described as ordinary Americans,' Biden said from the White House. 'There's no such thing. There's nothing ordinary about them. The people we lost were extraordinary. They spanned generations. Born in America, immigrated to America, but just like so many of them, took their final breath alone in America. As a nation we can't accept such a cruel fate.' The U.S. has been fighting the coronavirus pandemic 'for so long we have to resist becoming numb to the sorrow,' Biden said, and he urged Americans to continue wearing masks, staying socially distanced, and getting vaccinated when able. 'To heal, we must remember,' he added. After his remarks, Biden went outside the White House, where he was joined by first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and second gentleman Doug Emhoff for a moment of silence.

President Biden's attorney general nominee, Merrick Garland, vowed in his Monday confirmation hearing that he will prosecute 'white supremacists and others' who participated in the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob of former President Donald Trump's supporters. Garland's opening statement declared that the rioters, who were trying to get Congress to reverse Trump's loss to President Biden, committed 'a heinous attack that sought to disrupt a cornerstone of our democracy: the peaceful transfer of power to a newly elected government.' Garland, whose nomination to the Supreme Court by then-President Barack Obama was blocked by Republicans, is expected to be confirmed easily. 'Judge Garland's extensive legal experience makes him well-suited to lead the Department of Justice,' Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said in a statement.

Facebook, Australia reach deal on media payment law, ending news blockade
Facebook said Tuesday it will end its week-long blockade of Australian news sites after reaching agreement with the Australian government on a pending law that forces Facebook and Google to pay news providers for their content. 'Facebook has refriended Australia,' Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Tuesday. Under the agreement, the government will introduce amendments to its News Media Bargaining Code legislation that give Facebook and Google, among other things, more time to reach agreement with news providers before a government arbitration panel steps in with a binding deal. Google, after first threatening to pull its search engine from Australia, changed course and started reaching content deals with Australian news publishers.

The Supreme Court on Monday allowed Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance to obtain former President Donald Trump's tax returns. The court decided not to intervene and prevent the records from being turned over. New York prosecutors have been seeking eight years of Trump's personal and business tax returns from his accounting firm as part of an investigation examining a 'variety of business transactions.' An appeals court ruled in October that the tax returns had to be turned over. Following the Supreme Court's decision, Vance said, 'The work continues.' Vance 'can now require Trump's accountants to turn over the records,' NBC News reports, while noting that since such material turned over to grand juries have to be kept secret, the records 'might never be publicly released.'

Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, was arrested Monday at Dulles International Airport in Virginia on international drug trafficking charges, the Department of Justice said. Coronel Aispuro, 31, is a dual citizen of the United States and Mexico, and has been charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana in the U.S. She has also been accused of helping Guzman escape from a Mexican prison in 2015, The Associated Press reports, with court papers alleging that Coronel Aispuro worked with Guzman's sons and a person now cooperating with the U.S. government to construct a tunnel that Guzman used to escape from the Altiplano prison. Guzman led the Sinaloa Cartel for 25 years, and in 2019 was convicted of trafficking drugs into the United States; he was sentenced to life in prison.

Indiana casinos have a few new rules to follow after Gov. Eric Holcomb’s latest COVID-19 executive order.
Biloxi Casinos And Coronavirus
The regulations, imposed by the Indiana Gaming Commission, apply to casinos in counties labeled orange or red on the state’s color-coded map that measures the risk of COVID-19 spread.
Casinos in orange counties have to create a designated area – away from the gaming floor and any walking paths – where people can eat, drink and smoke, while socially distanced. Otherwise, eating and drinking are prohibited anywhere else in the casino (other than a restaurant) and mask-wearing is required at all times.
If a casino is in a red-colored county, it must also reduce its already limited capacity by 15 percent.
